Next in our Spices of Hollywood Series, we explore the spices of Harry Potter.
The Harry Potter movies, based on the popular books by author J.K. Rowling, are another great example of the uses of spices and herbs in Hollywood. In many of the Happy Potter movies, we see flavorful spices mentioned and used in the wonderful food that Hogwarts provides. Specifically, the desserts at this magical wizarding school are said again and again to be absolutely delectable.
For this blog, we’re going to focus in on the spices used to make some of the exquisite desserts mentioned in Harry Potter.
Pumpkin Pastries
On his way to Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Harry purchases some wizarding treats, pumpkin pastries being one of them. You can bake your own pumpkin pastries using some ground cinnamon and nutmeg for flavor, and garnish your pastries with cinnamon sugar.
Treacle Tart
Hogwarts’s treacle tart is depicted as Harry’s favorite dessert several times throughout the movies. Treacle tart is a sweet British pastry made with golden syrup, lemon juice, and breadcrumbs. Make treacle tart with a dash of ground ginger and some lemon peel granules (lemon zest).
Aunt Petunia’s Pudding Cake
In Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets Aunt Petunia makes a large dinner for a client of Harry’s uncle Vernon. Aunt Petunia hopes to impress the businessman and his wife with her cooking skills. To end the meal, Aunt Petunia fixes a delicious pudding cake and if you’ve seen the movie, you know that the pudding ends up all over Vernon’s client, thanks to Dobby. The Dursleys never got the chance to taste Petunia’s spectacular pudding cake, but you can make it using some ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, molasses granules, and nutmeg.
Hagrid’s Rock Cakes
Unless you bake them way too long or let them sit out for a few weeks on end like Hagrid, you can make delicious and crumbly “rock cakes”. With a pinch of salt and orange peel granules (orange zest) these rock cakes are the perfect treat for anytime!
