MSG is short for monosodium glutamate. It is naturally found in seaweed, some cereals, and sugar beets. It is used to intensify the flavors in savory dishes. Some people feel that it imparts a meaty “fifth taste”. These white crystals are also added commercially to many products, such as Chinese and Japanese dishes, frozen entrees, and snack foods.
Note: Its use has become controversial in the past 30 years because of reports of adverse reactions in people who’ve eaten foods that contain MSG.
