Today we are addressing a question we received recently from a MySpicer customer about pink himalayan salt vs regular salt. “What is the difference between pink Himalayan salt and more traditional salts such as table salt or sea salt? Do they taste different and can I use them interchangeably while cooking?”
Other than trace minerals which give each type of salt its own unique color, in terms of cooking there is no real difference between the salts. When used during cooking, the salt will dissolve and the flavor will be the same.
Pink Himalayan Salt Vs Regular Salt
When using these salts as a finishing salt, you will find many people who do think there is a slight difference in taste and some will say a huge difference in taste. I have heard and read reports that pink Himalayan salt has a floral flavor and that coarse salt has an earthy flavor. I personally can’t taste any difference but perhaps these folks have a more refined pallet than I. In my own experience, I can say that I have found a difference between pink Himalayan salt and regular table salt in that table salt has somewhat of an after-taste and I definitely don’t get that with the pink salt.
Another potential advantage to using pink Himalayan salt is that it contains 84 minerals and trace elements that may be beneficial for your health.
My suggestion for using different salts in cooking is to use them both to enhance the presentation. The pink grains of pink Himalayan salt will pop on certain dishes and the white grains on others, so you can add some contrasting color and beauty to your food.
