Fall has finally arrived! The days are starting to get cooler and as I look out my window I see the leaves on my aspen trees showing the first early signs of yellow. This time of year I also notice a change in the types of foods I crave and want to prepare. Time to get out your favorite fall spices and enjoy the season!
Here are some of my favorite fall spices:
- Allspice: This warm and sweetly pungent spice is great in pumpkin nut bread. A family favorite this time of year.
- Cloves: The rich, sweet flavor of cloves makes a wonderful addition to hot spiced cider. A yummy treat on a cool afternoon.
- Cinnamon: The combination of sweet and spicy flavor provided by cinnamon make it a fall favorite. It is an absolutely necessary ingredient in my apple and pumpkin pies. I also enjoy this mixed with sugar on my toast in the morning.
- Nutmeg: This traditional baking spice is great in all sorts of sweets such as pudding and pie but my favorite use of nutmeg is in butternut squash soup. It is delicious and a perfect, fall comfort meal.
- Vanilla Sugar: There is nothing as good as the sweet, full taste of vanilla mixed with sugar. This is a delicious addition to my coffee on a lazy Saturday.
