One of the most interesting and frequently sought after products that MySpicer carries is our Ghost Chili Powder. (Bhut Jolokia) Recognized in 2007 by the Guinness Book of World Records as the hottest chili pepper on earth, Ghost Chili is EXTREMELY HOT!
Our Ghost Chili Powder comes from dry, ground ghost chili peppers. The ghost pepper is known as Bhut Jolokia and has been in existence for many centuries. It is believed to have originated in Assam, India. The word Bhut, means “ghost” and many believe that the Bhutias people used this name because of the way the heat suddenly sneaks up and surprises anyone who eats it.
Ghost Chili Peppers typically range from 855,000 to 1,463,700 heat units on the Scoville scale. To give you an understanding of what that scale means, the only plants that rate higher are not naturally grown but instead are synthetically developed. An example would be law enforcement grade pepper spray.
So how hot is our Ghost Chili Powder?
Here is a great comparison: Tabasco sauce ranges from 2,500 to 5,000 Scoville units. A jalapeno pepper measures anywhere from 3,500 to 8,000 Scoville units. A Habanero chili ranges from 100,000 – 350,000 Scoville units. And a Ghost Chili Pepper ranges over 1 million Scoville Heat Units. That is pretty astonishing! I wouldn’t recommend eating an entire ghost chili pepper in one bite.
When used judiciously, our ghost chili powder is excellent in chili, salsas, meat, pasta, stir fry, sauce, stews, vegetables and rubs. It will add a little extra heat to your favorite recipes.
